New Members Class 2008
Membership in the church is the beginning or continuation of a wonderful journey of faith. This six week class is intended to give people who are exploring membership a firm foundation of understanding in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a chance to explore their own individual questions and yearnings and calling in Christ. The class will be taught by a team of Pastors, Christian Educators and Elders at Covenant.
Feb 10 Session 1 Bible Study --Inspired Word of God
Understanding God's word in Scripture is an important step in our faith journey. Our first session in the new members class is the study of scripture in which we will experience Presbyterian principles in Bible study and explore how God is calling us. John Calvin says that "scripture is the lens through which we see the risen Christ".
Feb 17 Session 2 Church History--The Intersection of God's Story and Our Story
Christian Educator Thomas Groome says that real education and growth in faith is where we discover how God's story and our story intersect. Our study of the history of the Christian and Reformed faith sets the ground work for understanding where we are now as a people of faith in light of our faith journey.
Feb 24 Session 3 Theology--Faith Seeking Understanding
Theology is not a dead set of dogmas but a lively way of exploring, understanding and expressing our faith. This session will explore the theological issues that describe us as Christians and more specifically Reformed or Presbyterian Christians. We will look at the sovereignty of God, the trinity, the incarnation, the authority of Scripture, the saving grace of Jesus Christ and the empowering and enlivening work of the Holy Spirit.
Mar 2 Session 4 The Mission of the Church--Participation in Missio Dei
As Presbyterian Christians we believe that our mission outreach is participating in the ongoing mission of God in and through Jesus Christ. We will look at how mission is understood in the Presbyterian Church and how it is expressed in the work and worship and outreach of the people of God at Covenant.
Mar 9 Session 5 Fellowship of the Holy Spirit--Koinonia
Fellowship is not just fun and games at Covenant (although we do like to have fun and enjoy God and each other), but it is building up of the community of Christ. It is what is described in Acts 2:42-"And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." We will explore what it is to be a community in Christ and the various opportunities to participate in such communions at Covenant.
Mar 16 Session 6 Membership--Discovering and sharing the Gifts of the Spirit
"Now you are the Body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed first..." (Cor. 12:27). In this class we will explore the gifts that you bring to the ministry of Jesus Christ and discern together ways that you might be able to offer up those gifts in service and celebration of the saving work of God in Christ Jesus.
